If you've ever found yourself saying "stop licking the dog" or "no, you can't sample the dogfood at petco" or You can't take all your clothes off at a party" to your children, you'll roar with laughter at this book.

Similar to books like I Heart My Little A-Holes and I Just Want to Pee Alone, Stop Licking That takes on the reality of parenting with a honesty, humility, and some stealthy tips and tricks.

Chapters include “Toddlers Eat Like Snakes,” "The Three Inventions That Would Make Me The World’s Best Mom," and "21 Things I Lost, Forgot, or Got Wrong Before 9 AM.”

Mitchell's years in education and child protection along with her irreverent humor helped her include an appendix of true, but sometimes strange Tips, Tricks, and Weird Facts. Read them to find out why it might be a good thing to teach your kids to blow snot rockets, and how duct tape can help save you money on toddler mittens.

***THIS BOOK WAS RECEIVED FROM THE AUTHOR***

As someone who does not have kids yet, I’ve read plenty about what to expect in the transition to parenthood. Stop Licking That takes the no-nonsense approach with a slightly humorous spin to let new parents know that it’s going to be a messy process for the first couple of years. While each of the chapters covers some topic about raising kids (especially two young boys), the stories tied to these sections end up being some of the same kinds of stories you’d hear from any other parent of young boys. If anything, Stop Licking That merely confirms that we shouldn’t take parenthood too seriously.

As I received an Advanced Reader Copy for my review, I will assume that the handful of minor proofreading errors have been fixed. I also hope the gutter margins were increased, so the words don’t get lost in the crease between pages. I would have also changed the cover picture to a young child licking something they shouldn’t since the current cover almost made me look like a pervert when I was reading this book (not having kids and all that). I hope the author used a pen name, though, as the subterfuge to hide the children’s identities would be moot in the information era in which we live. Overall, though, Stop Licking That is a solid book with amusing stories and an almost Dave Barry-esque humor (read: lots of boogers).

Of course, the main problem with a book like this is that it’s all circumstantial. I know the parenting style I’m planning on eventually using will likely be drastically different from the author’s, and my children aren’t likely to be exactly like the ones she had. Furthermore, while there was plenty of humor in the book, the one chapter meant to be taken seriously brought up an interesting point: where was the discipline in the rearing of these children? I don’t consider spanking to be a severe offense (even if it was done in frustration), but if there was a corollary section on how the author and her husband usually disciplined her children, it would highlight how out-of-place the spanking incident was.

A standard set of humorous stories about raising children, I give Stop Licking That 3.5 stars out of 5.

Stop Licking That edition by Karin Mitchell Laura K Anderson Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews

“Stop Licking That!” is a zany titled parenting funny book by Karin Mitchell. Fans of Erma Brombeck or Laurie Notaro will appreciate Mitchells style and humor, as she recalls topics as pregnancy, babyhood, toddlerhood, parenthood, and well.. tiredness. Mitchell is a teacher, and holds a M.A. in Creative Writing from Regis University, Colorado-- where she enjoys winter ski sports with her husband and two sons.

It was necessary to rename her sons Mars and Gomez for the book-- this was done so the boys would speak to her when they reached adulthood. Mitchell’s stories of pregnancy and delivery will take many Mom’s/Grandma’s down memory lane— mom’s to be may want to skip this part (just kidding). Rob had fun talking to his infant sons impersonating a police officer (lowering his voice) “Sir..Sir? Please take your hand out of your mouth..” or “Sir, Sir, I’m going to need you to stop crying..” As new parents they had to insist that “Terrorist Baby” couldn’t pull Mommy’s hair out.
In the times B.C. (before children) Mitchell took tremendous pride in maintaining a spotless house—by the sounds of it, Mitchell’s house was so clean one could eat off the floors. Now, pre-children, it was necessary to let go of the “fantasy land” and “sparklealicious” cleanliness. Things would never be as they once were, as all parents of young children know time is no longer our own.
From the book… “Parenting is as simple, and as hard as getting your kids to stop licking things. You tell them not to. They laugh, and do it anyway!”… Now that Mars is five, and Gomez is three, she and Rob were grateful to have kept them alive, with their best childproofing measures. Mitchell had a close call when she found Mars with a fully wrapped tampon stuffed in his mouth. Rob had a greater scare when he had the boys in the garage, and turned around to discover Gomez 10 ft. in the air on a 12 ft. ladder, he still eats lint off the floor.

There are more serious matters and parenting examples Mitchell shares regarding discipline, swearing, bullying, school, daycare, and getting along with other children. The story of the male penguins caring for their offspring was exceptionally good, as Mitchell shared the story of her parents’ separation after years of marriage, and her acceptance of a gay parent. In addition to the adorable book cover, Mitchell has included altered (cartoonish) family photos. Special thanks to the author via for the direct digital copy for the purpose of review.
Guys. This book has some serious levels of awesomeness. Mitchell not only nails parenthood, but she has an amazing sense of humor. Yes, I did think of Erma Bombeck when I was reading this, if Erma had been allowed to write more about bodily functions. Not in a vulgar way, but in a "I have two boys and what do you expect" kind of way. Side note I have a little boy. Raised him just the same as his sister. And yet he describes everything as "poop." Also, when we were passing the bra section at Target, he hollered, "Slow down, I want to see!" which only resulted in us walking faster. Also the naked thing, which he finally outgrew thank God! But I have not been exposed to boys very much before I had my kid. Mitchell is confirming a lot of my suspicions that boys are a different weirder species than girls, though they are still all right.

But ANYWAY I am writing a review here. I did get a kick out of this book. For some reason some of the pictures are not showing up in my version, though I don't know if that's some kind of computer firewall thing, or gremlins, though this doesn't really detract from my enjoyment of the book.

And yes, everything she writes about pregnancy is true. Just throwing that out there.
